These days, a router table will definitely ease your life from many points of view. It is essential that you choose one that will meet all your needs. If you are a beginner woodworker, and you don’t know which router table to buy, look online for reviews of the best benchtop router tables. Once you buy a quality router table, there will be no limit to the number of projects that you can make. Read the following lines to learn about the best woodworking projects that you can do with a router.

Project #1 – Oak book stand

You can easily create an oak book stand using a router. Keep in mind that it is a lot better to display your books vertically, and this is why a furniture piece like this will be very useful. Here are the essential steps that you need to follow, in order to obtain a wonderful result. Once you have traced the template onto the hardwood in two identical pieces, you need to cut out those two pieces with a band saw. You need to cut close to the outlines.

Then you need to make sure you use relief cuts when you will actually make some of the sharp-cornered cuts. It is necessary to do so, in order to ease tension on the band saw blade. The next thing you need to do is to smooth out the curves. You can do this by using an oscillating spindle sander. You could also use the drum sander found on the router. Set up a stationary router with a 3/8 inches radius round-over bit that has a bearing tip.

Adjust the depth of cut in such a way that the bottom of the bit’s round-over carbide can be just beneath the router table. Once you have rounded the curved sections on both sides, you must sand your woodworking project. It is highly recommended to complete the sanding process by using finer grits of sandpaper. Then drill the holes for the hinge screws and apply the shellac finish.

Project #2 – Tool box

This is without a doubt one of the best woodworking projects that you can do with a router. The first thing you need to do is to cut the 1×10 to the proper lengths. You can do this with ease by using the compound miter saw or circular saw. Then you need to work on the two side pieces. You must rip into 2 strips the remaining 1×10, and then be cut to length. Cut the fence at a width of 4 inches, by setting it on the table saw or radial arm saw.

The remaining piece of 1×10 needs to run the saw twice, creating two 4 inches wide strips. The next step is to re-configure the table saw to 8 inches wide and then rip the 2 end pieces to this width. You need to use the radial arm saw in order to cut these 2 strips to 24 inches in length. Once you have cut to length the ends and sides of the toolbox, you need to use a compass in order to mark the curves into the desired shape.

Once you have made the curves on the two end pieces of the toolbox, you must cut these curves. You can do this by using a jigsaw or a band saw. The next step is to create the dovetails that will actually connect the 4 sides of the box together. Set up the router with a dovetail bit and then configure the dovetail jig in order to cut the tails in either the side or end pieces of your woodworking project. Then, you must change the router to a straight-cutting bit.

You must cut the pins in the remaining pieces. Keep in mind to reconfigure your dovetail jig for this sort of job. Dry fit the 4 sides of your toolbox, in order to ensure proper connections. Disassemble the sides, but not before you mark the insides of each of the 4 pieces. Next, you need to cut the dadoes for holding the bottom of your box. Then, drill the holes in order to accommodate the handle.

Project #3 – Hardwood cutting board

The easiest woodworking project you could take up with your routing table is this one. It takes approximately 2 hours to complete it, and the resulting product will come in handy as you will use it in the kitchen, saving money as you don’t spend them on an overpriced cutting board.
Required materials and tools:

  • Wood glue;
  • Food safe finish;
  • Hardwood pieces;
  • Table saw;
  • Router table + router;
  • Cauls;
  • Planer;
  • Jointer;
  • Palm sander;
  • Clamps;
  • Glue brushes.

Now that you have all the tools and materials, you can proceed to start the project. If the wood you have is dimensioned, you can move on to plane the face. If the planks are not alright from this point of view, joint and plane them first. The second step is to place the wood on the planer bed and run the wood through it. Afterward, use the table saw to cut strips of various boards. Next, ley them out and glue them together. Sand and plane the boards for them to be perfectly flat on both sides. Trim to size the board, sand it again if necessary, and round over the edges. Now you’re done, and you can proceed to use your unique, customized cutting board when chopping veggies!
